Top Ways to Use Social Media to Help Your Tech Career

Social media is still one of the best ways to build your personal brand as well as your company brand. Tiffany Rowe shares some helpful strategies.

While the tech sector is a continually-growing field around the world right now, and attracting more and more women each day, this growth also means that there is plenty of competition for all of the best jobs. As a result, it’s important to do everything you can to build a network and your profile in the industry, and to know how to go after top roles proactively. If you’re keen to land your dream job in 2017, read on for some ways that you can utilize social media to help your tech career today.

Develop Relationships With Key Contacts on LinkedIn

While social media sites are fun to use to stay up to date on industry news or the comings and goings of people you know, it is also important that you utilize them to develop relationships with new key contacts. Doing so can help you in many ways during your career. For example, you can meet people who can provide you with advice or introduce you to potential employers, or get to know individuals who end up becoming clients or supporters.

One of the best sites for networking is LinkedIn. To get the traction you need on it, and ensure that you present yourself in the best light, it is important to make sure you have a comprehensive profile. Part of this involves posting your CV in an online format. Like any usage of a resume, it should be well-structured and well-written, with no typos or other errors. It pays to use resume services or the fresh eyes of a friend or family member to ensure that your information is up to scratch.

To generate as much interest as possible, your profile should include things such as:

  • Your past employment history, with all your relevant accomplishments and responsibilities
  • A list of your skills, training, and qualifications
  • Recommendations from your past co-workers and/or clients
  • A professional-looking photograph of yourself
  • Relevant examples of your work where you can

It is also a good idea to include keywords throughout your profile which relate to your location, industry, job type, and the like. This will make it easier for people to discover you when inputting search terms.

Once all of your details are posted, you should take time to build up connections. Keep in mind that you don’t need to know people already to send through a contact request. Look for people working at the companies you’re interested in joining at some stage during your career, so that you can start fostering these relationships. As well, don’t forget to get to know recruiters from HR companies that specialize in your industry or location.

In addition, post regular updates about all the new skills you’ve attained, any training you complete, career successes you enjoy, events you attend and so on. Joining a wide variety of LinkedIn groups (those which are related to your sector, specialization, or position) is also helpful. Wherever possible, try to take part in discussions amongst group members where you can contribute valuable information or opinions.

Network on Other Sites

Outside of LinkedIn, you’ll also be able to do some great networking on other sites. It helps to connect with as many of the “movers and shakers” in your industry as possible. You can do this by referring to people in your updates, blog content, videos, and graphics (e.g. by quoting them, mentioning their work and what you like about it, or by doing a round-up of articles you’ve found useful).

Once you’ve done this, make sure you let these key influencers know that you have mentioned them online. While you can certainly complete this manually, a more effective way, particularly for Twitter, is to download the Notifier app.

Notifier works by searching through your content for the various individuals and brands you have mentioned. Once it has done this, it then locates each person’s Twitter handle and puts together a personalized Tweet to send them.

You can decide if you want the program to send the Tweet as it has been automatically created for you, or if you want to edit the posts first. The Tweets which are created can be sent directly to Buffer too, which means you can easily plan your posts amongst your other social media uploads.

Showcase Your Expertise

Another great way to utilize social media for your tech career is through showcasing yourself as an industry expert. By regularly posting about your work, knowledge, skills opinions and experience, and providing readers with updates on relevant news, events, research and the like, you will show potential contacts, particularly recruiters and employers, that you are “on the ball” and worth taking an interest in.

While Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and other social media sites work well for developing your standing as an expert, you might want to also consider investigating the Blab app. Blab is a live-streaming app that allows users to get in on the trend for live content through hosting their own small show. Up to four people can chat on camera at once on it, giving you a talk-show style vibe.

The benefit of live content like this is that it allows viewers to get involved more. Rather than just checking out a static update, the live-chat interface means that they can ask you and your guests questions in real time. The speakers who you choose to join you may be industry experts in their own right too, thus providing you with another outlet in which to connect with key people.

Blab works well whenever you want to interview people who are well-known in your industry, or when you want to give your opinion about hot topics, promote some new products or services, or teach potential clients something.
