Emerging Markets And Women Entrepreneurs On The Rise

In the call for participation during this exponential growth of opportunity, the answer is simple – women have become the backbone of talent in the rising opportunity of emerging markets.

By Katrina Salas-Padilla (Contributing Writer, Women 2.0)

As the U.S. grapples with the economic downturn, we hold onto threads of hope in promising entrepreneurial ventures. Any opportunity to propose a revenue-generating idea for job creation in the U.S. has been taken with sincerity, while there remains a loophole to America’s domestic economic crisis where entrepreneurship and technology have sought refuge as well — the emerging markets.

Emerging Markets And The Role OF Women

Brazil, Russia, India and China – known as the “BRIC” countries – have provided a womb for economic growth long before U.S. economic downturn. Now more than ever, they have birthed opportunity that continues to grow exponentially. With new opportunity comes the question of adept talent – who will fill in its shoes?

Sylvia Hewlet reports in Forbes Magazine, “only 10% to 15% of the college-graduate population of China and India are well-prepared enough to be part of a management track at a local corporations. So the effective highly qualified pool of people is quite limited?”

Women As Untapped Human Capital, Talent

In the call for participation during this exponential growth of opportunity, the answer is simple – women have become the backbone of talent in the rising opportunity of emerging markets.

In Brazil, for instance, Hewlet reports that women now make up “60% of college graduates.” In total, 55% of college degrees are now going to women in emerging markets. These statistics suggest that the promising revival of America’s economy not only lies in the womb of emerging markets, but especially in the hands of women.
