What Can Walmart Expect From Marissa Mayer As A Board Member?

This week, Google’s VP of Local Marissa Mayer has been nominated for Walmart’s Board of Directors.

Walmart Stores announced yesterday that its board of directors has nominated Marissa Mayer, the female face of Google for election as a new member of the company’s board at Walmart’s Annual Shareholders’ Meeting on June 1, 2012. If elected, Mayer would become the sixteenth member of the board.

What can Walmart expect from Marissa Mayer? Vision, passion, excitement, drive and loyalty?

Walmart Chairman Rob Walton conceded in the statement that Marissa’s insights and expertise in the technology and consumer areas are valuable assets to Walmart as we move forward. Of course, the online giant Google and the off-line giant Walmart brought together through Marissa’s board seat.

Marissa stated that she has “long been a customer and admirer of the company. Walmart is an amazing story of entrepreneurship and, as one of the world’s most powerful brands, touches millions of lives every day. I look forward to contributing to Walmart’s continued growth, success, and innovation in the years to come.”

Marissa Mayer is about innovation through open culture. Walmart may need her innovative vision to stay ahead of the game.

She dares to make decisions that follow her passion: She likes good food and was prepared to go close to it by acquiring Zagat.

And she knows how to deal with failure.

She brings Silicon Valley Networking New Style to Walmart.

She is a loyal worker, having been with Google more than 13 years. This is her official bio:

Mayer, 36, is vice president of Local and Maps for Google Inc. in Mountain View, Calif., a position she has held since 2010. She leads the product management and engineering efforts of Google’s local, mobile, and local-based products. Mayer previously served as Google’s vice president, Search Products and User Experience, beginning in 2005. Mayer began her career with Google in 1999 as its first female engineer and has launched hundreds of products and features during that time.

Mayer holds a bachelor’s degree in symbolic systems and a master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University. She serves on the boards of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Ballet, the New York City Ballet and the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

In the middle of the debate about women on boards, it’s great to see one of the largest companies in the US to take a bold step and nominate a woman, an impressive woman.
