Marissa Mayer’s Real Elephant: China

Because she’s a female CEO, everyone focused on the fact that she was being “anti-feminist.” If Mayer were a man, the narrative would be about the business strategy to bring Yahoo back to life.

Marissa Mayer jokingly broke her silence about the Yahoo! work from home policy at the Great Place to Work conference last week by displaying a slide with a big purple elephant emblazoned with WFH during a closing keynote speech.

“It’s not what’s right for Yahoo! right now,” she said. “It was wrongly perceived as an industry narrative.”

If Mayer were a man, this would not have been the case. Because she’s a female CEO, everyone focused on the fact that she was hurting working mothers, being “anti-feminist,” and hypocritical because she had recently built a nursery for her newborn baby at her office. If Mayer were a man, the narrative would be about the decision as a key business strategy to bring Yahoo! back to life and that’s all.

Intel Is Buying Female-Founded Mashery

That’s according to ReadWrite, which ballparks the purchase price at $120-$180 million.

SimpleHoney Startup Acquired by OpenCoin

Serial entrepreneur Joyce Kim celebrates her second startup acquisition!

Joyce Kim co-founded Korean entertainment community website Soompi in 2006, which was acquired by Seoul-based company Enswers in 2011.

This week, Joyce’s current company SimpleHoney was acquired by payment company OpenCoin for an undisclosed amount. SimpleHoney built a mobile app to help you keep track of things you love.

Amazon Acquires Goodreads, Co-Founded By Elizabeth Chandler

This week, Amazon.com acquires female-founded book ratings-and-recommendations engine Goodreads.

Freelance journalist Elizabeth (Khuri) Chandler co-founded Goodreads with her husband in 2007. The San Francisco-based GoodReads is a free “social cataloging” website for book lovers. The ratings and recommendations site for books rivaled Amazon.

So it can’t be much of a surprise when this week, Amazon announced acquiring the reviews-and-ratings startup for an undisclosed amount of money. Read More »
