Happening November 6th and 7th, The Sum is first annual two-day creative conference from San Francisco-based web publication, events producer, online shop, and creative services studio, The Bold Italic. The Sum will bring together people from a variety of industries and disciplines, including tech and design, the place where those two elements meet, in order to enhance their abilities to cultivate their collective creativity so they might re-imagine possibilities for themselves and their cities.

The current lineup of speakers includes:

  •    Candy Chang – Artist, designer, urban planner and TED alum who focuses in on what makes cities both more comfortable and contemplative

  •    Audrey Crane – Partner at DesignMap

  •    John Bela – Urban designer at Gehl Group and former co-founder (and partner) of Rebar Design Group

  •    Zach Klein – Vimeo and DIY.org founder who, among other things, runs a website dedicated to cabin porn, and the seed stage venture capital fund, Founder Collective

  •    Scott Doorley – Creative Director at the Stanford d. school and co-author of Make Space, whose works encompasses both physical spaces and digital media that connect people and enhance creative work and encourage people to shift from media consumers to media producers

  •    Karen Cheng – application designer and former Microsoft Program Manager who famously “learned to dance in a year”

  •    Clark Sheffy – Managing Director of IDEO
  •    Joshua Wolf Shenk – author, essayist and curator whose most recent book is Powers of Two: Seeking the Essence of Innovation in Creative Pairs

Day 1 is the conference day and will consist of a single track of speakers and discussions at SFJAZZ in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood. The complete lineup can be found here.

Day 2 will be comprised of a series of workshops hosted by organizations and individuals at locations across San Francisco including:

  •    Parklet Design
  •    “Sparkelizing” one’s design thought processes in situations that are not particularly creative
  •    Using storyboarding in the process of creating new products
  •    How guerilla street art can be channeled into “pictographs” as a design-styled method of raising the level of communication within communities
  •    Use human-centered design to end language barriers and design digital solutions for accelerated English language learning.

Full descriptions for each of the five workshops can be found here.

The Sum operates on the premise that the variables that make up the equation of urban living have to be added up and accounted for in order to find a solution that works. “Creativity isn’t something we’re born with or without,” says The Bold Italic Design Director Melissa Small, “it’s a muscle that needs to be built, stretched & strengthened like any other. Creativity demands bravery and with that, a willingness to see the world differently and get behind wild ideas. The Sum will help guests re-imagine their own potential for creative thinking & output by flexing those oh so important creative muscles.”
