CheckiO helps new coders learn through gaming. Thanks to $750k in seed funding from Vegas Tech Fund, the startup is expanding its community and awareness — but not yet monetizing.

Everyone says learning how to program is the future. Some have found creative ways to make it happen, even if people don’t have access to programming education in school.

One such startup with a creative idea is CheckiO. Founded in Ukraine in 2011 and a 2013 Techstars Boston grad, CheckiO incentivizes learning how to code through gaming. Users compete and collaborate to help each other learn and fine-tune their code.

Founded by CTO Alexander Lyabah and CEO Liza Avramenko, CheckiO recently secured $750,000 in seed funding according to Boston Business Journal. The seed funding was led by Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh’s Vegas Tech Fund. CheckiO just relocated from Boston to Las Vegas, where the team hopes to grow its community more.

“Having strong roots in Boston and with the West Coast support we want to grow CheckiO nationally,” co-founder and CEO Liza Avramenko told Boston Business Journal.

CheckiO is not yet generating revenue, but plans to continue to build its technology and community before monetizing.

“Besides expanding further, the funding will go towards offline events, increasing awareness about the company and communicating with our community,” Avramenko told iventures.eu.
